Resetting of Auditory and Visual Segregation Occurs After Transient Stimuli of the Same Modality

In the presence of a continually changing sensory environment, maintaining stable but flexible awareness is paramount, and requires continual organization information. Determining which stimulus features belong together, are separate therefore one primary tasks systems. Unknown whether there global or sensory-specific mechanism that regulates final perceptual outcome this streaming process. To test extent modality independence in control, an auditory experiment, visual moving-plaid experiment were performed. Both designed to evoke alternating perception integrated segregated percept. both experiments, transient distractor stimuli presented blocks, such distractors did not overlap frequency space with plaid stimuli, respectively, thus preventing peripheral interference. When was opposite as bistable (visual during streaming), probability percept switching significantly different than when no presented. Conversely, significant differences switch observed following within-modality distractors, only pre-distractor segregated. Due modality-specificity distractor-induced resetting, results suggest conscious at least partially controlled by modality-specific processing. The fact have indicates reset due interference locus frequencies spatial locations integrated.
